The NY Jets football team fired head coach Eric Mangini on Monday (12/29/08) after loss to the Miami Dolphins eliminated them from contention for the playoffs. This was after losing four of the last five games, ended a promising season.
In November, the Jets 8-3 record led to speculation of a Giants-Jets Superbowl in the NY media. The addition of Brett Farve at the earlier this year had raised hopes that they could at least make the playoffs for the first time in decades.
But Farve had not done well in the last four games with only two touchdown passes and nine interceptions. It remains to be seen whether Farve returns next season. He is undergoing tests on a possible injury.
Chad Pennington, who the Jets had released after signing Farve, quarterbacked the winning Dolphin team.
Mangini had coached 3 years of his 4 year contract and had a record of 23 wins and 26 losses with the Jets.
This ends a NY sports year when the baseball Mets collapsed for the second year in a row and the Yankees missed the playoffs for the first time since the 90’s, but the football Giants won the Superbowl and are favored to repeat.
