Celebrate National Cookie Day December 4 2008

December 4th is National Cookie Day. It’s very timely leading up to the holiday season.

Latest figures indicate that Americans consume about 2 billion cookies per year or about 300 per person.

The favorite recipe is chocoiate chip. It was invented by accident by a woman named Ruth Graves when she was trying to make chocolate cookies and did not have the usual chocolate for the flavoring. She used semi-sweet chocolate that she thought would melt but did not. She later sold the recipe.

Although most of the cookies are made by the big manufacturers (North Carolina has the most employees in the industry), it is very popular as a family activity – kids love to make cookies!

And, of course, a very popular holiday gift for friends and neighbors.
