Sunday, September 13, 2009 is National Grandparents Day. A day to honor and show love for grandparents by cards, gifts, visits, phone calls or dinner invitations. With more working mothers and aging of the population, many grandparents are providing valued services as part of the extended family.
About four million greeting cards are sent on Grandparents day.
Grandparents are part of normal family living for many American families. According to the Census Bureau:
- 6.5 Million grandchildren live with their grandparents.
- Four out of ten are responsible for the children’s basic needs
- One out of 3 preschoolers whose mothers work are cared for during work hours by grandparents.
September 13th is the day to formally honor and show respect for grandparents. They often are an integrated part of the modern American family.
