The NY Jets football team fired head coach Eric Mangini on Monday (12/29/08) after loss to the Miami Dolphins eliminated them from contention for the playoffs. This was after losing four of the last five games, ended a promising season.
In November, the Jets 8-3 record led to speculation of a Giants-Jets Superbowl in the NY media. The addition of Brett Farve at the earlier this year had raised hopes that they could at least make the playoffs for the first time in decades.
But Farve had not done well in the last four games with only two touchdown passes and nine interceptions. It remains to be seen whether Farve returns next season. He is undergoing tests on a possible injury.
Chad Pennington, who the Jets had released after signing Farve, quarterbacked the winning Dolphin team.
Mangini had coached 3 years of his 4 year contract and had a record of 23 wins and 26 losses with the Jets.
This ends a NY sports year when the baseball Mets collapsed for the second year in a row and the Yankees missed the playoffs for the first time since the 90’s, but the football Giants won the Superbowl and are favored to repeat.

C. C. Sabathia Ready to Pitch for NY Yankees Baseball Team
After 3 days of intense negotiations, C. C. Sabathia is reported ready to sign with the New York Yankees baseball team for a $160M, 7 year contract.
This appears to only depend on him passing a physical. Sabathia reportedly has an opt-out option after 3 years.
The original offer, made about 3 weeks ago, was for $140M, 6 years. Final negotiations added another year and $20M. This is the richest contract in history for a pitcher. It topped the next highest offer by Milwaukee Brewers ($100M 5 year) by a wide margin.
This follows the signing of Francisco Rodriguez (K Rod) for 37M 3 year contract to pitch for NY Mets, as New York baseball teams address their pitching problems to help fill the new stadiums next year.
Sabathia is 28 years old with career record of 117-73 with 3.66 era in 8 major league seasons.

Armed Robbers in Drag Hit Paris Harry Winston Luxury Jewelry Store
Police say three armed robbers raided the Harry Winston store off the Champs-Elysees in Paris last night and made off with Euro 80 M in rings, necklaces, luxury watches, earrings and other gems. Two were dressed as woman and wore wigs.
The three robbers threatened the 15 employees with hand guns, knew some of the employee’s names and knew of concealed hiding places in the store.
Harry Winston is a New York based retailer of high end jewelry. Its founder was known as the “king of diamonds”. He donated the famed Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian back in 1958. The jewelry stores cater to the rich and famous. The company has supplied jewelry for the Oscars.
The same store was robbed in October of last year for a reported loss of about $25M.

Celebrate National Cookie Day December 4 2008
December 4th is National Cookie Day. It’s very timely leading up to the holiday season.
Latest figures indicate that Americans consume about 2 billion cookies per year or about 300 per person.
The favorite recipe is chocoiate chip. It was invented by accident by a woman named Ruth Graves when she was trying to make chocolate cookies and did not have the usual chocolate for the flavoring. She used semi-sweet chocolate that she thought would melt but did not. She later sold the recipe.
Although most of the cookies are made by the big manufacturers (North Carolina has the most employees in the industry), it is very popular as a family activity – kids love to make cookies!
And, of course, a very popular holiday gift for friends and neighbors.
